Frits Vrijlandt is a Dutch national and has served as President of the UIAA – International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation -since 2012.
With the close support of the UIAA Executive Board, Management Committee and the UIAA office staff, Frits spearheads the federation’s climbing and mountaineering movement which comprises wide-ranging responsibilities from sport competition (UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup and Championships), safety (mountain medicine, safety label and standards, training and qualification courses) through to sustainability (including the UIAA Mountain Protection Award and UIAA Respect the Mountains projects). The UIAA represents over 90 member federations from 69 countries and territories. At the 2016 UIAA General Assembly, Frits was re-elected for a second four-year term.
As a mountaineer, Frits has climbed the seven highest peaks in the world’s seven continents. All at the first attempt. He was the second Dutchman to do so and the first from his country to successfully scale the north side of Mount Everest. Frits lives in the Netherlands with his wife and two children.
